history
Victorinox developed model no. 237 k in 1897 or shortly thereafter. The year 1902 is often given as the date for the additional tools, scissors or saws. However, certain indications (legally protected screwdriver; 4 visible rivets) suggest that the beginnings were a little earlier.
The model No. 237 k has undergone various changes throughout hihistory, as have all army knives. Model No. 237 k was produced until well into the 1970s. It is unclear exactly when it was taken out of production. One can only speculate about the reasons. The model no. 237 in 91 mm is still in production.
functional parts
The model no. 237 k has a saw in addition to a large and a small cutting blade, the can opener and the screwdriver as well as the awl and the corkscrew.
Model no. 237 k was available with or without a toothpick/tweezers and with or without a bracket.
material thickness
Big cutting blade: 2.4 – 2.7 mm (later 2.5 mm); small cutting blade: 1.6 mm (later 1.5 mm); Saw: 2.2 mm (later 2.0 mm; even later: 1.75 mm); Screwdriver: 2.5 mm (later 2.0 mm); Can opener: 2.5 mm (later 2.0 mm); Corkscrew: 3.2 mm (later 2.6 mm); Awl: 2.5 mm (later 2.0 mm)
construction
The model no. 237 k was a 3-layer pocket knife. The bottom layer consisted of a small cutting blade, screwdriver and corkscrew on the back; the upper layer of large cutting blade, can opener and awl on the back. Between these layers, in a separate layer, was the saw, which moved around the base rivet like the small cutting blade and can opener.
scale material
Initially, fiber was used as the scale material, later celluloid/ cellidor as well as horn and mother-of-pearl/tortoisescale, sometimes also staghorn.
Liners/spacers/rivets
The first version had iron rivets and spacers, brass liners. Later, nickel silver was used throughout for all these components, as well as aluminum as the liner material. In the meantime, both circuit boards and intermediate layers are made of aluminum.
