history
Model No. 285, originally designated as Model No. 145, was developed by Victorinox in parallel with Model No. 284 around 1915. The bark remover was initially made of either horn or ivory and was permanently mounted. The scales were made of fiber (Model No. 145) or horn (Model No. 145 ½). The bark remover was then called " ivory cleaver " or " horn cleaver ". The price difference between ivory and horn was CHF 0.30 per piece (cf. catalog 1922).
Up until the end of production around 1950, the changes to the model almost exclusively affected the bark splitter. Originally fixed in horn or ivory, it was made foldable, first in brass and later in another silver metal. In addition, an intermediate layer made of brass was installed in order to be able to produce the bark splitter thinner.
Only carbon steel was used as the blade material. This represented a special combination that combined expensive noble materials such as horn and ivory with inexpensive carbon steel.
functional parts
Model No. 285 had two cutting blades and a debarker.
material thickness
cutting blades: 2.5 mm; Bark remover: 1.6 – 1.8 mm
construction
The model no. 285 is a 2-layer pocket knife. The upper layer consists of a cutting blade and the bark remover, the lower layer consists of the second cutting blade. In all 3 models No. 285, No. 286 and No. 287 the upper blade remained identical, while the lower 2nd blade changed in each case. An intermediate board was installed.
