No. 17

history

Victorinox produced model no. 17 between around 1920 and around 1970. From the original model with 4 blades, only the large cutting blade and the saw remained throughout history. The original drill awl was replaced by a pocket awl and the hooked blade by a small cutting blade. The change took place sometime between 1920 and 1930. The special drill awl disappeared from all original peasant knives and was replaced by either a pocket awl or a square awl.

Model No. 17 was produced by Victorinox in all 4 sizes and in all variants until the entire series of farmer's knives was discontinued. The price difference within the sizes was moderate. In 1952, for example, the price of a model no. 17 in Horn I class made of stainless steel was CF 11 for 1/17 and CHF 10.80 for 2/17; for 3/17: CHF 10.50; for 4/17: CHF 10.20.

functional parts

The original pocket knife No. 17 had a large cutting blade, a saw, a awl and a hooked blade, the later version had a pocket awl instead of the awl and a small cutting blade instead of the hooked blade. The additional bail was available as an option for the model.

material thickness

Big cutting blade: 2.5 mm – 2.8 mm; Awl: 2.0 mm; small cutting blade: 2.0 mm; Saw: 2.0mm

construction

Model No. 17 was a 3-layer pocket knife. Large cutting blade, saw and small cutting blade were attached to the head rivet, only in the very original version the saw was still attached to the foot rivet. The pocket awl also moved around the foot rivet, which shared the upper layer with the small cutting blade. A center rivet attached the back feathers.

scale material

Victorinox originally used black fiber scales as the material for this pocket knife, later also class I and II horn and red fiber instead of black fiber.

liners/rivets

The rivets and liners were made of steel or brass, the jaws of steel or nickel silver, depending on the version. In the case of the high-quality, so-called "fine version", rivets and liners made of brass and jaws made of nickel silver were used, and rust-resistant steel was used for the tools, if this was already available.
