No. 172

history

Victorinox developed the model no. 172 - like this entire series in 90 mm - in the 1920s. Model no. 172 differs from model no. 171 in its straight scale shape and central foot rivet.

Compared to model no. 171, Victorinox has not produced this model since the early 1950s. The model was available with both aluminum and horn scales, compared to model no. 171, which never had horn scales. Apparently there was another target group for this model. Horn as a relatively porous scale material, which tolerates little heat and not much moisture, was hardly intended for bakeries.

Characteristic of both model no. 171 and model no. 172 are the aluminum scales, mostly embossed with a company logo or company name. It was often the same companies that issued both model no. 171 and model no. 172 for employees to use. The difference between the two models is relatively small. Model no. 171 feels a little better in the hand, but is also a little wider. The employees could possibly choose between the two models, depending on their wishes.

Model No.172 has a cutting blade. There were never other functions such as ring, bracket or toothpick/tweezers.

construction

The model no. 172 is identical in structure to the model no. 171 and only needs 7 components. The head rivet fixes the cutting blade, the center rivet fixes the back spring. The foot rivet does not go through the back spring, but above it and also fixes the scales and at the same time increases the pressure on the back spring.

scale material

Smooth aluminum, horn and steel were used as the scale material. The model was not anodized in color, probably because it was taken out of production before the anodized scales were manufactured.

Liners/spacers/rivets

Model No.172 had no sinkers and liners. The rivets were made of brass or nickel silver.
